How it works

From request to paid in about two seconds.

x402 lets a client pay for a single request with a signed stablecoin transfer. Penni is the facilitator in the middle: it checks the payment and puts it on the blockchain. You keep control of prices and of the money.

One paid request

What happens on the wire.

Your server stays in charge. Penni never sees your content and never holds the payment: the transfer goes straight from the payer's wallet to yours.

One paid request, step by step The agent requests a page, gets a 402 with a price, signs a transfer and retries. Your server asks Penni to verify and settle; Penni submits the transfer on-chain, the money moves from the payer to your wallet, and your server returns the content. 1. 1–2

    Ask and quote

A request without payment gets 402 and the price, in the standard x402 format Penni prepared for that path.

  2. 3–4

    Sign and retry

The agent signs a transfer of exactly that amount to your wallet. Nothing moves yet; it is a signed promise.

  3. 5–7

    Verify and settle

Penni checks the signature, amount, token and recipient, then submits it on-chain. On Base and Solana we pay the network fee.

  4. 8–9

    Serve

With the transaction hash in hand, your server returns the content. The money is already yours.

Safety

What Penni checks before it settles.

A signed payment only goes on-chain if every check passes. Failed checks cost you nothing.

  1. It comes from your serverEvery verify and settle call carries your site's API key. Without it, nobody can spend our gas in your name.
  2. It pays youThe recipient must be the wallet you set for the site. A payment to any other address is refused.
  3. In a token you acceptOnly the tokens you selected, on the network you selected.
  4. The signature and amount are rightThe facilitator checks the signature, the amount, the validity window and the payer's balance before submitting.
  5. You have creditsIf your balance can't cover another settlement, verification stops, so you never serve content you can't get paid for.
