How can a European business accept stablecoin payments?

Short answer: Choose MiCA-regulated stablecoins such as Circle's EURC and USDC, receive them in a wallet you control, and use a payment service that settles them on a low-cost network like Base or Solana. For per-request payments from AI agents and apps, an x402 facilitator such as Penni does the settling without ever holding your money.

Stablecoins are digital money that tracks a currency one to one, held on a blockchain. For European businesses they matter for one reason in particular: they make small and machine-to-machine payments possible, which cards and bank transfers don't. Here is what to know before you start.

Which stablecoins?

Under the EU's MiCA regulation, stablecoins that track a single currency are e-money tokens and need an authorised issuer. Circle issues EURC (euro) and USDC (US dollar) through its French entity under MiCA. For a European business, EURC has the advantage that prices, revenue and bookkeeping stay in euro.

Which network?

The same coin exists on several blockchains. Ethereum itself is secure but costs too much per transfer for small payments. Networks like Base and Solana settle in seconds for a fraction of a cent, which is what makes per-request pricing work. Check which networks your exchange or bank partner accepts before you choose, because moving coins between networks takes an extra step.

Custodial or your own wallet?

  • Custodial: a provider receives the payments for you and pays out later, often in euro. Convenient, but the provider holds your money and onboards you with a full identity check.
  • Non-custodial: payments go straight from the payer to a wallet you control. No one can freeze or hold your revenue in between, and the money is there within seconds. You are responsible for the wallet's recovery phrase.

Penni is non-custodial: it checks and settles payments, but they move directly from payer to you. See how it works.

Bookkeeping and tax

A stablecoin payment is revenue like any other: record it at its euro value on the day you receive it, and charge VAT where it applies. Keep an export of every payment with its date, amount and transaction reference. Penni gives you CSV exports per site and month, with the on-chain transaction for each settlement, and invoices in euro for its own fee. This is general information, not tax advice: ask your accountant how to book crypto-assets in your country.

Turning it into euro

You can keep stablecoins in your wallet or sell them for euro at a crypto exchange or another regulated provider and withdraw to your bank. Compare fees and check which tokens and networks they accept; some only take deposits on Ethereum.

Getting started

For websites, APIs and AI tools, Penni lets you accept EURC and USDC per request with x402: a WordPress plugin, a Cloudflare Worker or middleware, prices in euro, and a fixed €0.002 per payment. Penni is run by Tav IT in the Netherlands, on EU servers; see why Penni. To see what a stablecoin payment request looks like, try the x402 checker on our demo.

Does my business need a licence to accept stablecoins?

Accepting stablecoins as payment for your own goods or services generally doesn't make you a crypto-asset service provider. Holding or exchanging them for others would. If in doubt, ask a lawyer about your situation.

Do my customers need crypto?

They need a wallet with the stablecoin. For AI agents and apps that's normal; for people it's still less common, so most businesses offer stablecoin payments alongside their usual methods.

What happens if I lose my wallet?

With a non-custodial wallet, the recovery phrase is the only way back in. Write it down offline and keep it safe; no provider can reset it for you.
